Most commonly term in technology.

Definitions:

Adware: A application which automatically plays, displays, or downloads advertising material to a user’s computer without users knowing it, or with their partial assistance.

Backdoor: It is a client-server type of application allowing remote access to a computer.

Browser Hijacker: It diverts a user to unwanted web sites by making modification to the user's web browser settings such as a home page, search engine, etc.

Cookie: It tracks a user's surfing history and gathers the user's personal information when a syndicated website is visited.

False positive: Clean file mistakenly labelled as malware. False positives can cause problems, when the file is consider a virus or malware and deletes/quarantined when it is important to the operation of a system, the system may become unstable or even stop working.

Firewall: Designed to block unauthorized access (Such as hackers from gaining control over your computer)

Hoax: This is not a virus, but a trick message warning of a virus that doesn’t actually exist. (Hoaxes are the most common with trustworthy companies ( “Microsoft warns…”, “CNN announced…”, etc.) )

Keylogger: A program that collects and saves a list of all keystrokes made by a user. This program could then publish the list, allowing third parties to access the data (password).

Malware: This term is used to refer to all programs that contain malicious code (MALicious softWARE), contain malicious code, whether it is a virus, Trojan or worm.

Network attack: Operations to disrupt, deny, degrade, or destroy information resident in computers and computer networks, or the computers and networks themselves.

Registry keys: A set of command for your computer to follow/run.

Rootkit: It is a special type of infiltration able to hide its “root” on the infected system without system administrator even seeing it and thus escape detection.

Spyware: It is able to secretly gather information about users or organisations without their knowledge. (Such as password)

Trojan horse: IT is not a virus. They are programs that enter computers appearing to be harmless programs, install themselves and carry out actions that affect user confidentiality.

Viruses: Programs that can enter computers or IT systems in a number of ways, causing effects that range from simply annoying to highly-destructive and irreparable.

Worm: This is similar to a virus, but it differs in that all it does is make copies of itself (or part of itself).

Virus/malware symptoms:

Computer too slow

Unexplained activity (such as pop-ups, new icons in the desktop etc which you did not download

or install)

Computer keeps crashes, hangs or keeps showing the blue screen

Will not boot (on)

Solutions:

Reformat (works 100 % but it deletes all the files and programs that you installed in your computer and it usually takes around 4-6 hours to completely to reinstall the default programs).

Using an antivirus/antispyware to remove it (Works most of the time)
