Delete:
Firstly, "delete" does not mean "erase" but rather "release memory for other use." The data may sit around un-used on the drive for years. That's why recovery software are able to recover file they had been accidentally deleted or delete by viruses.

Shredding:
It is also called overwriting or wiping in a harddisk. Basically it overwrite or erase your data so that it cannot be recover. And also it helps to save harddisk space and increase computer performance.

Conclusion:
I guess the answer is obvious. File shredding not only erase your contents on your disk(in terms of privacy) and also help you recover your precious harddisk space. 1 disadvantage is it requires a longer time than just deleting a file.

Free software to use:
File Shredder 2 - Shred file or folder and is much faster than wiping the whole harddisk
Ccleaner - Wiping the whole harddisk which might be quite long.

Instructions for Ccleaner:
The image basically explains all of the steps.

When you check on "Wipe Free Space", the above message will pop out.
I suggest, check this box ONLY if you are wiping disk space, otherwise for normal cleaning, un-check this option.
