Online scanners can connect to the local system and scan the file system, memory etc. for malware, using the most up-to-date version of the provider's detection engine. Most require an up-to-date browser and many only support certain browser types. They will usually require the installation of an ActiveX control or similar.
Use online scanner to test whether your anti-virus is able to detects all the malware in your computer.

McAfee FreeScan
Works with IE only.
Requires user to install Active X.
Should viruses be found, FreeScan links to information about the virus and tells you what you can do to clean your system.

Symantec Security Check
Works with IE only.
It won’t fix infected files.
